in Eady's model. The initial condition is a localized disturbance on the
tropopause, which gives rise to a developing wave packet that extends to the right
due to downstream development.
Now compare the idealized simulations with the following observational example over the Pacific Ocean. The first loop shows the surface development, and the second shows the 500 hPa development.
