----------------------------------------------------------- StarOffice 5.2 ----------------------------------------------------------- Dear User This file contains important program information. Please read this information carefully before starting work with StarOffice 5.2! ########################################################## IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR INSTALLING STAROFFICE 5.2 ########################################################## Before installing StarOffice 5.2 you need to install a patch for the operating system. This can be obtained from SUN Microsystems. They are found on the CD-ROM in the following directories: /solaris/patches/solaris2.5.1/ --> Solaris 2.5.1 /solaris/patches/solaris2.6/ --> Solaris 2.6 /solaris/patches/solaris7/ --> Solaris 7 The patch is named: "Shared library patch for C++" For further information please refer to: http://sunsolve.sun.com/pub-cgi/show.pl?target=patches/xprod-WorkShop IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE THAT WITHOUT THIS PATCH YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WORK WITH STAROFFICE! You need to log in to the system as root before carrying out the installation. An example for the patch installation for Sun solaris sparc follows: ------------- Solaris 2.5.1 ------------- su - mkdir /tmp/patches cp /paches/solaris2.5.1/106529-05.tar.Z /tmp/patches cd /tmp/patches uncompress *.Z tar xvf 106529-05.tar patchadd 106529-05 cd /tmp rm -rf patches ------------- Solaris 2.6 ------------- su - mkdir /tmp/patches cp /paches/solaris2.6/105591-07.tar.Z /tmp/patches cd /tmp/patches uncompress *.Z tar xvf 105591-07.tar patchadd 105591-07 cd /tmp rm -rf patches ------------- Solaris 7 ------------- su - mkdir /tmp/patches cp /paches/solaris7/106327-06.zip /tmp/patches cd /tmp/patches unzip 106327-06.zip patchadd 106327-06 cd /tmp rm -rf patches Note: Use the commands showrev -p or patchadd -p to display a list of all patches that have already been installed on your computer. Use the patchrm command to deinstall a patch. ----------------------------------------------------------- Installation: First Steps ----------------------------------------------------------- Place the StarOffice 5.2 CD-ROM in your CD ROM drive. After a couple of seconds the StarOffice files should be available under /solaris/office52. If you have switched off the automatic Volumemanagement, activate the CD ROM with "volcheck cdrom". ----------------------------------------------------------- Tips for Successful Installation ----------------------------------------------------------- Log in as normal using your user ID and run the "Setup" program from the /cdrom/solaris/office52 directory. Select an installation method and installation directory. You require write access to the installation directory. If you want a network installation (multi-user installation), start (as root or any other user) the setup with the option /net. After the network installation has been completed, every user wanting to utilize StarOffice needs to call up the setup from the directory of the network installation (WITHOUT /net) under their user ID. The workstation installation will be then provided. The workstation installs about 2MB of data in the Home directory of each user. ----------------------------------------------------------- Migrating from StarOffice 5.1 to StarOffice 5.2 ----------------------------------------------------------- If StarOffice 5.1 has been installed on your system, the setup application of StarOffice 5.2 allows you to migrate from the old to the new version. ----------------------------------------------------------- Starting StarOffice ----------------------------------------------------------- Start StarOffice 5.2 by running the "soffice" script which is found in the installation directory (e.g., "/home/joe/Office52/"). ----------------------------------------------------------- Notes on East European, Russian, Greek and Turkish documents ----------------------------------------------------------- StarOffice 5.2 now provides better support of East European, Russian, Greek and Turkish character sets. You are now able to create, load, save, import and print documents containing Cyrillic characters on a Russian system. If you are using a Solaris/Linux system you only have to ensure that the corresponding locale has been set up and that the corresponding fonts are available. StarOffice can only print Type1 fonts on Solaris/Linux systems. If your fonts are only available as TrueType fonts, you have to convert them to Type1 fonts to print them. Problems with the character width or character positioning may arise with existing or converted Type1 fonts. In most case these problems can be corrected by using the SPAdmin program provided with StarOffice. More information can be found in the Setup Guide or in the SETUP.PDF file. Please note that documents containing East European, Russian, Greek and Turkish fonts may no longer be processed or loaded in a StarOffice 5.1a, 5.1 or 5.0 as crashes or loss of data may occur. StarOffice 5.1a, 5.1 or 5.0 will NOT issue any warnings if you try to load this type of document. ----------------------------------------------------------- Additional Language Modules of CD Version (Dictionaries, Hyphenations, Thesauri) ----------------------------------------------------------- In addition to the dictionaries contained in every installation set, the CD version of StarOffice 5.2 contains further language modules made up of dictionaries, hyphenation and in part of thesauri as well. The following language modules are currently available on the CD: Afrikaans, Brazilian, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English (UK), English (US), Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. A Readme file with installation information is found in the ADDON directory of the StarOffice installation CD. Remarks: These additional language modules are only available on the CD version of StarOffice 5.2 and cannot be downloaded. ----------------------------------------------------------- File locking ----------------------------------------------------------- The default setting in StarOffice for file locking is 'disabled'. The environment variable STAR_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING enables you to switch on locking for NFS-mounted directories (e.g. setenv STAR_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING 1). Please note: we are aware of problems with Solaris Sparc 2.5.1 and 2.7 in connection with Linux NFS 2.0. If this applies to your system environment, we strongly recommend not switching on locking for NFS-mounted directories. Otherwise, StarOffice might hang when trying to open a file on a NFS partition mounted from a Linux machine. In addition to setting the environment variable STAR_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING, you should take a further step. Either you need to set the environment variable STAR_PROFILE_LOCKING_DISABLED. (Another way would be to remove the respective comment signs from the soffice and setup script files.) Or you should set or mount the respective file system with the option "-o llock". (You can also add this option to your mount table /etc/vfstab.) ----------------------------------------------------------- Java Configuration in StarOffice ----------------------------------------------------------- You can reset the Java Runtime Environment in StarOffice at any time. The following steps must be followed: 1. Open the "StarOffice Bookmarks/Java/Java Setup" entry in the Booksmarks folder. Select a Java environment on the dialog that appears. 2. Close StarOffice, otherwise it will overwrite the new entries. 3. Select the Java Environment that StarOffice is to use. 4. Close the dialog. 5. The new settings will be applied when StarOffice is restarted. IMPORTANT : StarOffice must be closed before saving the settings. If not, all changes will be lost. ----------------------------------------------------------- PGP Support Under Unix ----------------------------------------------------------- PGP support requires a JAVA environment installed on the system, because the PGP to StarOffice link takes place by way of JAVA. In StarOffice you also have to enable use of Java, under Tools - Options - Browser - Other. ----------------------------------------------------------- Using Info-ZIP ----------------------------------------------------------- The installation program uses source text from the Info-ZIP group to compress data. No extra charges are incurred by the use of this code, and the original compression sources are freely available on the Internet from http://www.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/ ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/infozip/ ----------------------------------------------------------- Included / Modified Source Code ----------------------------------------------------------- Portions Copyright 1998, 1999 James Clark.
